Ireland’s first ever commemorative coin issued!

2016-01-21 Thu

Ireland finally opens its account of issuing its first commemorative coin. Worth €2, this Easter Rising coin was designed by Emmet Mullins which marks the centenary of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic.

The obverse of the coin features a representation of the statue of Hibernia perched atop the Dublin GPO. The centenary dates and ‘HIBERNIA’ are inscribed in hand-rendered lettering on the coin. Hibernia is the historic personification of Ireland. The reverse is the same as that on other €2 coins.

The coins will be released into circulation through banks, An Post, and cash-in-transit companies. Being the first of its kind, this one can be considered as one of the most significant coins of the world.
